| America's
Heart & Soul
directed by Louis Schwartzberg
It is quite inspiring for a documentary
to celebrate diversity, eclecticism and originality in America with conjoint
regard for the unity and equality that make for a melting pot rather than
mosaic. Unlike the current crop of politically intent non-fiction films,
America’s Heart & Soul lacks thought-provoking subjects yet
is also without a cynicism that leaves most documentary audiences feeling
depressed or dejected. Plethoric in its human-interest profiles and therefore
extremely segmented, this feel good film of the summer is not without
subliminal messages but the prime communication is in the will of the
human spirit to overcome obstacles and handicaps. In the end, the choppiness
provides ease to short attentions and its detachment to the individuals
is forgivable despite a longing for more time given to a few favorites.
While it might make more sense as an ABC prime time special than theatrical
release, there is a possibility that such a film might serve more productively
as exported product than certain other representational embarrassments.
