Kontroll

directed by Nimród Antal (Biztosítás)
written by Jim Adler (Out of Order) and Nimród Antal

produced by Tamás Hutlassa ("Privát kopó")

starring Sándor Csányi (I Love Budapest), Zoltán Mucsi (Rose's Songs), Csaba Pindroch (A Kind of America), Sándor Badár (In July)

lowdown:  Cannes award winner about gang youths in the Budapest subways.

low expectation:
Imagine Luc Besson's Subway without the cheesy '80s outfits.  For all the awards, reviews and box office success, there doesn't appear to be much worth from the trailer aside from skinhead goofiness.  I wouldn't have even known it was a sci-fi film from the footage that I've seen.  At least I'm curious enough to see what the big deal is all about.

con:  it might need to sit about 15 years to grant aged cheese goodness
pro:  Antal claims the film was influenced by Tarkovsky's Solyaris

follow-up:
Nimrod Antal creates a fantastic and mysterious world as if he, himself, created the Budapest metro and its riders.

synopsis/press release:
The massive labyrinthine netherworld that is the Budapest subway system provides the stunning setting for KONTROLL, a high-style, high-speed romantic thriller in which the lives of assorted outcasts, lovers, and dreamers intersect and collide, and where one handsome young hero, one mysterious maiden, and one particularly nasty killer must conduct a race against time, trains, and destiny itself in their frantic pursuit of one another. KONTROLL was awarded The 23rd Prix de la Jeunes presented in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival and was Hungary's most successful film in the domestic box office in 2003. It uniquely combines the dynamic impetuosity of an American action thriller with the darker broody moods of the Magyar soul. -- © ThinkFilm
